Thousands of families all across the country gathered in front of television screens, eager to find out who would become the 45th president of the United States, November 8. At around 3 a.m., Donald Trump had secured the needed 270 electoral votes to win. It was a great shock to all since Hillary Clinton, who was predicted to win, had captured the popular vote but Trump had beaten all odds and taken 309 electoral votes when the final votes were tallied to win the election. Americans’ opinions varied dramatically on the results. Dozens of celebrities have also shared their thoughts on this election. In the days after the election thousands of people have converged on the streets of major cities in protest.
The same Americans who rallied in front of Trump Towers urging him to drop out of the election, are are now filling up city streets in protest of his new presidency. Police made several arrests in Portland, Oregon. “Due to extensive criminal and dangerous behavior, protest is now considered a riot,” said Portland police officials before making the arrests, which are indictable as a Class C Felony. Many arrests happened in New York. “We reject the president-elect,” chanted protesters.
As more and more protests spread across the country, Trump himself responded to the thousands of anti-Trump protesters on Twitter. He tweeted, “Just had a very open and successful presidential election ,now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!” The protests are still occurring all across America, it is uncertain when or how they will come to an end, or if they even come to an end. Regardless, all Americans, anti-Trump or not, are hoping the best for the country.
