It’s so weird to start a new year. I still write 2012 on my papers. Anyway, here’s a list of anticipated movies in the new year, from the return to 22 Jump Street to a twist on a religious tale. There’s definitely a prominent movie trend this year: ‘out of this world.’
1. The Monuments Men: Starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett. A World War II platoon are tasked to rescue art masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their owners. February 7 is the release date.
2. Veronica Mars: The hit tv-show turned film with Kristen Bell and James Franco. Bell stars as a contemporary Nancy Drew. It comes out March 14.
3. Divergent: a Hunger Games-esque, futuristic movie starring Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet. It’ll be released on March 24.
4. Noah: Yes, that Noah, with the animals. But this time, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Russell Crowe and other stars are involved. And, there’s a nuance of an environmental message for us modern-day viewers. Release date is March 28.
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier: Die-hards rejoice! Chris Evans returns as Captain America. In theaters April 4.
6. Amazing Spider-Man 2: For another dose of superhero action, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone return, but they’re on a new mission. Hits theatres May 2
7. X-Men: Days of Future Past: The cast of the old and new X-Men team up for this film. Anticipate seeing Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, and Nicholas Hoult. In theaters May 23.
8. Maleficent: Angelina Jolie stars as the villain of Sleeping Beauty- the evil fairy who curses Princess Aurora (played by Elle Fanning) to the fate that sets the tale in motion.
9. The Fault in Our Stars: The popular novel by John Green is set to the big screen, starring Shailene Woodley (this is her year.) Two teens fall for each other at a cancer support group (don’t forget tissues.) In theaters June 6
10. 22 Jump Street: After the success of “21 Jump Street”, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill reprise their roles. This time, instead of “returning” to high school, their investigations take them to college. In theaters June 13
11. Guardians of the Galaxy: Far out. A lost-in-space pilot bands together with aliens (to guard the galaxy). Hits theaters Aug. 1
12. Interstellar: Christopher Nolan (behind Inception), films this sci-fi in outer space starring Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, and Anne Hathaway. Hits theatres Nov. 7
13. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1: I don’t know about you, but any movie with gorgeous Josh Hutcherson or hilarious Jennifer Lawrence is worth seeing. Plus the books were really good. In theaters Nov. 21
14. The Hobbit: There and Back Again: Yes, another Hobbit movie! In theaters Dec. 17
