The Rise of Country Music

Hannah Popadin-Lesniak, Reporter

Nowadays more people are starting to listen to country music. It is now tied as the most listened to music genre with pop and rap. I am the biggest fan of country music and always listen to it 24/7.

Country music is also known as western, hillbilly, and southern music. It originated in the Southern United States in the early 1920s. At first, it was not popular but it only grew from there. Country music takes its roots from genres such as American folk and the blues. The instruments that are tied with country music are banjos, harmonicas, fiddles, and guitars.

More than 115 million Americans stream country music on the daily and it is only rising from here. The most popular country singers nowadays are Carrie Underwood, Thomas Rhett, Little Big Town, Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Blake Shelton, Zac Brown Band, and more.

Country music is very popular because of the lyrics, the live shows, the culture, and the community of artists. I started listening to country over two years ago and now it is the only genre I listen to.
