Once again, the graduating class of 2024 has won Battle of the Classes. BOTC was held on March 1st in the brand new Wantagh High School gym and saw intense competition and extreme sportsmanship between the grades. The class of 2024 won their first BOTC as sophomores, their first appearance in the games as the event was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the spirit week leading up to BOTC is the most participated in of the year as involvement counts towards overall scoring points, the last, and most aggressive, BOTC spirit week event was the Pennywars. By donating pennies and other coins to earn points for their own class and knock off points from others, students raised $1,400 for a Wantagh High School organization providing cap and gowns, yearbooks, and more to students who otherwise are not in a financial position to afford themselves the luxuries other students experience. This, Mr. Nyberg said, was “the most important thing” about Friday’s festivities.
In the sportsmanship category, the freshman came in first place, the sophomores in second and the juniors and seniors tied for third place. The freshman came to learn though, that no matter how much support they showed for the junior class in their all out war against the seniors, sportsmanship alone is not enough to win the battle. The freshman came in last place with 350 points, and with 540 points, the winning seniors conquered the sophomores and juniors who tied with 470 points.
The class of 2024 presidents are Nyla Lester and Jaclyn Silverman who run the club with officers Sierra Kenny, Hunter Fasano, Emma Nicholas, Josh Berlin, and Maylani Lee. The 2024 class advisors are Mrs. Harclerode and Mrs. Pepe. The officers and advisors have led the class of 2024 to greatness from homecoming floats, to showcase displays, to food drive participation over four years. Their dedication to the graduating students of 2024 is a testament to their collective kind and passionate nature and the coveted three-peat comes a testament to their guidance and sportsmanship in the years spent by the class of ‘24 in Wantagh High School.
