“Time’s” Person Of The Year, Greta Thunberg,
December 18, 2019
Every year “Time” magazine chooses one person and deems them to be the most influential person of the year, whether for the better or for the worse. This year’s “Time’s” person of the year is Greta Thunberg. While some are inspired by Thunberg and commend the “Time” for choosing her, others overtly disagree with their choice.
A notable member of the opposing group is Donald Trump, who was a contender for the Times most influential person of the year. In a tweet he said, “Greta must work on her Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend, Chill Greta, Chill!” Many believe that Trump should have been the “Time’s” person of the year because of all he has done this year for The United States. Including helping to take down ISIS, trying to build a wall, and cutting taxes. A campaign even took Thunberg’s cover picture and edited him onto the cover.
But many have found the comment disturbing.
“We should all be appalled by Donald Trump’s tweet,” CNN’s Chris Cillizza said.
The tweet has caused chaos and anger throughout the world, especially among Thunberg’s followers and fellow climate activists. Her followers and many others believe that his actions were inappropriate as Thunberg is only sixteen. But Thunberg has taken the tweet with a grain of salt and has even changed her Twitter bio to say, “A teenager working on her anger management problem. Currently chilling and watching a good old fashioned movie with a friend.”
Many across the globe believe that Thunberg has done so much and inspired multitudes of people across different backgrounds and nationalities at an incredibly young age. “Time” magazine chose her because its editors believe she has impacted the world drastically and that she stands as a symbol of the “power of youth” and as a symbol of hope. They believe that because she has inspired globally, and because she has called out political leaders and has pushed them to do more, that she has been very influential in this years events.
