While a teacher changeover is inevitable, the school always feels a sense of loss when a great teacher chooses to retire. This year, we lose not only a great teacher, but also a Wantagh alumnus, Ms. Kathy Butler. As a Special Education teacher, Ms. Butler has taught numerous classes here at Wantagh High School, including Global 9, Global 10, English 9, English 10, English 12, PLG, Economics, Living Environment, and Geometry!
While here at Wantagh as a student, Ms. Butler was a stellar student and athlete. She was an integral part of many sports teams and won “Pitcher of the Year” for Nassau County in 1986. During her time at Wantagh High School as a teacher that she is most proud of, Ms. Butler explained that “[her] biggest accomplishment is being given an opportunity to give back to [her] community. As a graduate of Wantagh High School, [her] life has always been centered around Wantagh. As a student, coach, and teacher, [she] will forever be a Warrior.”
Working here at Wantagh High School was very special for Ms. Butler. “I have enjoyed every moment at Wantagh High School, but to be honest, the most special and memorable time was being able to work with my dad for 22 years.” Her dad, Mr. Joe DelGais, was a beloved substitute teacher that used to sing his way through the halls.
“The feeling of family” is Ms. Butler’s favorite thing about working here in Wantagh. The thing Ms. Butler will miss the most about teaching here is “[her] day to day relationships with [her] friends and students.” When asked what she will be doing in her retirement Ms. Butler explained that she will “be taking care of [her] mom, traveling, and enjoying time taking care of [her]self.”
Former student Danny Pettinato said, “Ms. Butler always puts students ahead of herself and she’s so loving and kind.” Likewise, senior Brandon Rice said, “Even though I never had her, Ms. Butler and I connected in the hallway, always greeting each other in an English accent.”
The Wantagh halls will not be the same without Ms. Butler’s cheery high fives and her exclamations of “have a good day!” She has brought positive energy to this building and has touched so many lives in more than just an academic way. We will miss Ms. Butler but we are happy to have had her for 22 years and we’re excited for her to enter her next phase!
