With new advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, there are bound to be questions raised about its negative impact on the human population. Plagiarism is on the rise because of websites like ChatGPT and PaperHelp that write papers just by inserting topics. More sinister abilities of this intelligence are over-the-phone scams, replicating people’s voices, calling family members, and acting as if they are in a dangerous situation. Using a child’s voice, the scammers can stage a kidnapping, call the parents, and demand ransom.

According to ABCNY News, one victim of this scam, Jennifer DeStefano, reported that while her daughter was away she received the call with her daughter’s voice, increasing the chance Jennifer would believe the scammer. Authorities investigated and realized that her daughter was safe and that this call was a scam. This enraged Jennifer DeStefano, which compelled her to speak out about what artificial intelligence is capable of doing. 

This story raises many questions, especially ones like how did the scammers receive Jennifer’s daughter’s voice? Were they watching the DeStefano family for a long enough time to know Briana was not going to be home, letting them commit the “perfect crime”? This makes one wonder what Artificial Intelligence technology is actually capable of.
