Homecoming is one of Wantagh High School’s most spirited events of the year. With the annual pep rally to get us students in game mode and the rest of the community rallying around the cheer, dance, and of course, football teams, there are very few places a Wantagh resident would rather be on Homecoming day. This year, the Homecoming game was played against the Bethpage Golden Eagles and the final score was 35 – 0 Wantagh. While the football game is the main event, the Marching Band and dance teams combined halftime show and the routines of the cheerleading team helped draw in crowds as well.
At pep rally, the varsity sports teams were introduced to the Marching Bands halftime show set made up of hits from the 2010’s decade. The event was MC’d by Maylani Lee and Nyla Lester who announced the winner of the class showcase, the reigning champion seniors and the homecoming court finalists, Hunter Fasano, Patrick Iskander and Brendan Yeager for homecoming king and Jessica Konecky, Maylani Lee and Eva Loughman for queen. The winners of King and Queen were Jess Konecky and Hunter Fasano.
If you’re lucky enough to have watched the Homecoming parade march down Wantagh Avenue, then you heard the marching band’s masterful performance lead by Mr. Aviles and Mr. Cockren, a tradition the people of Wantagh have grown very well accustomed to. Following the band, of course, were the class floats following the theme of “Childhood Cartoons.” The freshman float themed to Cars came in fourth place, the juniors Scooby Doo float came in third place, the sophomores came in second place with their Toy Story float and the seniors, the reigning champions, came in first place with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themed float.
As always, Homecoming was a great success for Wantagh High School and the Wantagh community in uniting the community and setting the tone for the great school year ahead of us.
On the field, the football, cheer and dance teams celebrated senior day as did the band in their first senior day celebration. The seniors were announced one by one and walked to center field by their parents. There was also a pie throwing event hosted by the music department to fundraise for the Paris and London trip taking place this year. Administrators such as Dr. Guzzone, Mr. Pappas and Dr. Widdman as well as teachers Ms. Pepe and Mr. McCarthy had paper plates full of whipped cream thrown in their faces. The festivities on the field did not end there as is made evident by the 35-0 score. Junior Dylan Martini scored the first two touchdowns with the third coming from his cousin, senior Jake Martini, the fourth coming from senior TJ Carlo, and the final touchdown from sophomore Joe Nicholson who was pulled up the varsity at the beginning of the season.
