On Valentine’s Day, the world dons a reddish-pink hue, and many people receive gifts of flowers, stuffed animals, or chocolates. For the Wantagh High School Music Department, students donned matching blue sweatshirts and received the gift of travel, venturing to London for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Spearheaded by music educators Danilo Aviles, Eliza DellaMonica and Sameerah Cassidy, over 100 Wantagh music students from across the band, orchestra, and chorus made a transatlantic journey. From exploring historical landmarks and churches to seeing West End shows to performing their respective instruments in an old London church, Wantagh students received a very unique opportunity over the course of 8 days in February 2024.
Students adored visiting the Tower of London, an old castle and fortress from the 11th century. Being immersed in history thrice the age of our nation, students broadened their perspectives and had fun along the way. Another highlight of the trip was a Jack the Ripper tour, which led students on a journey of mystery and horror through the area where the notorious killer once roamed. The inclusion of this grotesque and bone-chilling experience on the itinerary was inspired by Dr. Kimberely Davis and the Wantagh Theatre production of Jekyll and Hyde.
With this unparalleled opportunity, many students took their first trips outside of North America, encouraging multicultural discourse and exploration. The next European expedition of Wantagh High School is unknown, but due to the success of this London trip, it will likely be within the next few years!
