Wantagh Seventh Grader Breaks 22-year-old Nassau County High School Diving Record

Wantagh’s Andrew Capobianco set the county record in diving on February 8 at the Eisenhower Aquatic Center. With a score of 518.35, he made history as the first seventh-grader to win the Nassau County Championship. He exceeded the previous Nassau County record set in 1990 by more than 10 points. He’s going to states February 25 in Buffalo, where he hopes to continue his undefeated season (10-0).

Although Capobianco is hoping to make top 10, his diving coach, George Taylor, is confident that he could win States. He’s seeded 7th and trailing behind the top divers, who are seniors and juniors, by few points.

An incredible aspect to this story is that he only started diving a little over a year ago. With only a year of experience, imagine how he will compete over the next five years as he gets better and better.

“Apparently the record he broke was from a diver who went to the Olympic trials,” says Coach Rafferty, head coach of the Wantagh Boys’ and Girls’ Swimming and Diving teams. “But right now we’re just focused on him doing well at States and continue to excel in his academics.”
