In the second to last game of the regular season Wantagh girls’ soccer team did something it has only done one other time in history: It beat the defending state champion Southside, 1-0, October 16, to earn the No. 2 seed in the Nassau County Class A tournament.

“We knew from the beginning they were going to come out strong, we just had to play our game,” Junior Ally Murphy said after the big win. The game was basically even the whole time, both teams having good opportunities. Sophomore goalie, Julianna King had 7 saves to make that game her 4th shutout of the season. The first half ended with a score of 0-0.

“At halftime we all relaxed and realized we can win this game we just have to finish,” forward Michele Smith said. And that’s what the girls did. With about 15 minutes left Ashley Gendels who is only a freshman scored from the top of the 18 to make the final score 1-0. This was a huge win for Wantagh and its coach Mr. Polo.
