Boys’ and Girls’ Lax Teams Make Playoff Runs

The boys’ and girls’ lax teams made the playoffs as usual. And both teams made runs but couldn’t net a Nassau County Class C championship.

Boys’ lax lost in the second round of the playoffs and girls’ lax made it to the county championship for the second straight season. Both of these team look to take it one step further next year and both are looking like they are able to do so with the young cores of non-senior starters that will be returning next season.

The girls’ team first won a county quarterfinal crushing Bethpage 18-6. Shannon Sullivan had four goals and an assist. Also getting four points were Madison Taylor with four goals and Dylan Small with four assists. Jill Balkunas had  three goals and an assist.

The girls won the semifinal game against North shore 8-7 in the final second on a goal scored by Balkunas. Makenna Boutin won the draw setting up Balkunas dramatic game winner. Madison Taylor tied the game with about a minute to go. This advanced the No. 2-seeded Warriors to the county finals for the second straight year, where they lost to No. 1-seeded Cold Spring Harbor,  10-7. The Warriors finished the season with a 9-9 overall record.

The No. 2-seeded Wantagh Boys team’s season ended earlier than expected and the main reason was because of injuries especially on the defensive side of the ball. After beating Mineola 11-4 in the first round of the playoffs led by Ethan Insinga and Nick Teresky, they lost 12-5 to No. 3 Locust Valley in the semis. They boys have a lot of key starters returning for next year  including their leading scorers Teresky, Thomas von Bargen, Insinga and faceoff specialist Anthony DiMatteo.
