The Wantagh Boys’ Baseball Team’s season has been one for the books. Despite a loss in their playoff game against Calhoun on Friday, May 19th, the team as a whole has had an amazing record. They ended overall with a record of 16-6-1 in conference A4, the most skilled in Nassau County. Longtime coach Keith Sachs said that “the boys worked so hard this season, and every game won was because of their determination and desire to win.” Coach Sachs was able to bring in his 500th career win on May 18th in the team’s third playoff game, a testament to the team’s prowess this season.
A large part of the team’s success has been because of its six returning seniors: Marco Diaz, Tim Hennig, Colin Crispyn, Joe Legovich, Anthony Freund, and Vincent McCartney. Hennig, a pitcher who’s heading to play ball for Binghamton, wrote midseason that they “had a great off-season and [they] all got a lot of work in which has been paying off.” He was proud of the team’s advancement to the playoffs as well and attributed it to the team’s stellar pitching, defense, and at bat skills. Junior Jack Tate had similar comments about the offseason, stating that the team “bounced back after a tough year last year and worked hard all throughout the winter. This season was definitely one of hard work and dedication in the offseason.”
The team making it to a fourth playoff game is an astounding accomplishment and Wantagh should be expecting big things from the resident baseball team next year as they look to have another great offseason!
