Varsity Boys Volleyball Season

The 2023- 2024 boys volleyball team started off strong this season and ended with an 8-8 record. The Wantagh Varsity Boys Volleyball has been a program for over 30 years, and the current team is as strong as ever. The team is led by their three captains: James Ambrosino, Alex Fasano, and Alex Roumbos. All three captains are seniors with longevity on the Boys Volleyball Team, each having started off their volleyball careers in middle school.

In addition to the senior captains, the team is also led by Ms. Fugazzi, Wantagh High School’s health teacher. Ms. Fugazzi has been coaching the Varsity Boys’ Volleyball Team for 32 years. She started the men’s program with Mr. Hobbs, and has also coached various middle school volleyball teams in Wantagh: including the boys’ 8th grade team and the girls’ 7th and 8th grade teams. Senior captain Alex Roumbos says, “Ms. Fugazzi is a great coach. She is always pushing the team to its best.” And the feelings are reciprocal— Coach Fugazzi states that “the captains encourage their starting lineup so that we can win.” Fugazzi is very hopeful for this season as she states that “the seniors have stepped up and have done a fantastic job of navigating their team.” Ms. Fugazzi and the team’s goal is to be successful in the playoffs while also recruiting players to build the program in the future.

In the start of their season, the boys played an intense game against Floral Park, who they ended up beating with the score 3 to 0. For the remainder of their season, they will face off against various different schools and hopefully make it far in the playoff rounds. The team’s current record is astounding and they still have over five games left before playoffs. They will have played a total of 15 games before the playoffs. Now that they will be back practicing in the main gym, the boys are working harder than ever. The boys have been on a winning streak the last couple of games and they are determined to keep that streak alive.
