After being defeated by Lynbrook High School twice in the regular season, Wantagh Girls Varsity Basketball upset the number 1 seeded team to advance to the Nassau Class A semifinals on February 29th.
The girls now move forward in their conference with a standing of 18 wins to only 4 losses- adding to Coach Bujacich’s record of over 400 career victories! Senior Captain Casey Kissinger, lovingly dubbed ‘Casey Clark’ by her peers, remarks that the team as a whole “all wanted to go to the final.” Kissinger’s effort has been apparent throughout the season, especially for her exciting 3 pointer in a quarterfinal game that turned the tides towards Wantagh with a mere 16 seconds to go. Furthermore, the efforts of senior captain Brighid Smith, junior captain Juliana Cerasi, and more should not go unnoticed. Cerasi and Kissinger both approach the end of the 2024 season as All County players, Smith and freshman Kayla Mannix as All Class “A,” and sophomore Sabrina Asadurian as All Conference. Many of these players have been participating in CYO basketball and middle school teams for a number of years, adding to the teams seemingly telepathic communication and court awareness.
As the team looks forward to the final Championship game on Monday, March 4th at SUNY Farmingdale, the team chemistry continues to remain at an all time high. With seniors Kissinger, Smith, and Emily McGeown nearing the end of their high school careers, Girls Varsity Basketball looks back to the underclassmen to carry on the legacy of Wantagh domination in both the regular season and finals. Good luck to the team!
Edit as of 03/05/2024: in an unfortunate upset, the Wantagh Girls Varsity Basketball team lost in the county finals to Cold Spring Harbor. Wantagh High School and the entire Wantagh community are extremely proud of the team for another deep playoff run.
