Wantagh High School’s Bowling team had a great season. During their winter season, the boys and girls team had many accomplishments. The boys team had a record of 2-6 while the girls team had a record of 52-80. Both teams practiced on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. They held meets at Wantagh’s Bowling Alley and also competed at other schools.
The Boys Bowling Team coach, Mr. Polo, has been the coach for 21 years. During his 21 years of coaching, Mr. Polo has led the team to four conference championships, one individual county championship, a 2nd place finish at the Nassau County Championship, a 3rd place finish at the Nassau County Championship, and has had three players who bowled a 300 game under his tenure. He states, “The boys worked hard all season. All of the members of the team improved tremendously from the first day tryouts until the last day of the season. It was a great group of young men to coach and work with.” The captains of the team were senior Vito Barretta and junior Anthony Marullo. Polo states, “Both captains led by example and pushed each bowler to work hard and improve all season long.” The boys’ biggest accomplishment was bowling their best games against the top competition in Nassau County. They may not have won all of the matches but they were able to compete each and every day.
The Girls Bowling Team also had a great season. The coach, Mr. Reh has been coaching the girls team for 11 years. Mr. Rey is an avid bowler and constantly works hard to get his team prepared for matches. Mr. Reh says “We had a lot of laughs together and a great season!” The captains, Jaclyn Silvermann, Heather Sheridan and Catherine Ibrahim led the team to victory over multiple schools. In their senior game, the Girl’s Bowling Team had an overwhelming victory with a team high average of 138.5. The biggest team accomplishment was when Wantagh defeated Division 11-0. Wantagh bowler, Jacklynn LaMaccia had a score of 210 high game and Senior Captain, Jaclyn Silvermann high series of 448. Coach Reh says that the captains, “were great role models for the younger athletes.” Both the girls and boys Varsity Bowling Team had great years filled with many accomplishments.
