The 2024-2025 Warriors began the wrestling season this November and took the mat with Championship expectations. The team was led by senior captains Shareef McMillan, Matthew Merecka, Kyle Frey, and Andrew Perez. Expectations were set high for the Warriors, who looked to capture the teams first State Championship since 2018. Wantagh finished the season with an outstanding 15-4 record. Unfortunately, the Warriors lost in the prelims of the playoffs, but that does not define what the team achieved this season. The Warriors faced off against Clarke High School on January 15, competing for a Conference Title. Ultimately, the Warriors emerged victorious and took home the Conference Championship and headed into the prelims with high hopes.
Although the season didn’t end the way the team had hoped, there were plenty of great moments along the way. Senior Captain Kyle Frey described the Conference Title win over Clarke as his “favorite moment of the season,” along with winning Most Outstanding Wrestler at the David Bloom Memorial Duels. Despite falling short in the playoffs, the team continues the season in individual matches, which run until February 14. Members of the team have the chance to compete for an individual county title to cap off the season. Kyle, who has been wrestling for Wantagh since 2016, said the thing he will miss the most about Warrior Wrestling is “the coaches, and the bonds I’ve built with them, which are like no other”.
