What better way to celebrate our first responders than a classic sports game? On November 1st, the New York Police Department and the Fire Department of New York celebrated their 30th annual ‘Battle of the Badges’ lacrosse game. The thrilling lacrosse game between two of New York’s first responder departments was one of the many ways in which we honor our community. Not only does the game act as a way for the Wantagh community to come together, but also as a way for people across New York State to cheer on their local heroes.
Every year, the NYPD and the FDNY host a lacrosse game to pay respect to our first responders who have both lost their lives and those who continue to help make the world a better place. This year, there was difficulty finding a location for the game this year, so our Wantagh 9/11 committee offered to host the game at our very own turf at the high school, while also offering to sponsor the event. It seems as if everything was in order until tragedy struck; Joseph M. Herman, aged 36, was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on August 31, 2025. Joseph was an active firefighter who served the FDNY for 10 great years. He was dedicated to the City of New York and being a father to his 2-year-old daughter. As a result of the devastating accident, the game was postponed. But now, these two departments of New York weren’t only playing to honor those who passed away on 9/11 and our first responders of today. They were playing to commemorate Joseph Herman and to remember his legacy as a devoted father, husband, firefighter, and athlete.
The game took place on the first Saturday of November, 2025, at our very own Wantagh High School. The game was hard-fought, with the FDNY winning by a score of 14-7.
Dr. Paul Guzzone, principal of Wantagh High School, attended the game and described his own feelings toward the match. When asked how the game made him feel, Dr. Guzzone replied, “Proud. Anything to do with the community is very valuable, and there is a great sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with doing something good for the right reasons.” The event not only brings our residents together, but it also makes everyone feel appreciation for those who make living in our town and our state a safe place. Moments like these are why we choose to live where we do and participate in heartwarming events.
The 30th annual ‘Battle of the Badges’ is one not to forget. Not only were they fighting on the field for a title, but for a cause. We honor Joe Herman as the brave and resilient man he was, and he will be remembered by the members of the Wantagh community. Overall, the lacrosse game was a success, and it will definitely be one for the history books.
