The New York State Education Department has recently instructed all New York State schools to block certain Google services, such as YouTube and Google Translate. The change must be implemented by all schools in New York State by Friday, February 28th, 2025. This is because the services do not comply with the New York State Ed-Law 2D, a law meant to protect student’s personal information from companies. Some time ago, Quizlet was also blocked since it does not comply with the legislation. This means that companies such as Google are not willing to protect student information with some of its services, so it will be blocked. It’s important to remember that this is a state-wide restriction, rather than just a Wantagh High School restriction, and these services can still be accessed on our phones. Faculty of the school are exempt from this law. Interestingly, now that the date has passed Google Translate can still be accessed outside of the website when you just google “Translate”.
