For years, school districts have tried to end bullying and harassment in school. Sadly, it still continues. There are websites like Formspring where anybody can say anything to a person anonymously.

Jamey Rodemeyer was a 14-year-old boy living in Buffalo, New York. He was a freshman in high school when he killed himself on September 18 after years of bullying and harassment for being gay. Jamey was bullied and taunted in school since the fifth grade, and he was also harassed on his Formspring. Many comments held the same malicious sayings and insults.

Some of the horrible posts: “JAMIE IS STUPID, GAY, FAT ANND UGLY. HE MUST DIE!”, “Go kill yourself, you’re worthless, ugly and dont have a point to live[sic],” wrote another, “You werent born this way. You shouldnt have ever been born[sic].”and “I wouldn’t care if you died. No one would. So just do it 🙂 It would make everyone WAY more happier!”.

Jamey’s mom buried him in a Lady Gaga t-shirt that reads “Born This Way” on September 25. Lady Gaga was Jamey’s idol. At a sold – out concert in Las Vegas, Lady Gaga said, “We lost a little monster this week. … Jamey, I know you’re looking down on us. And you’re not a victim. You’re a lesson to all of us.” One of Jamey’s last messages was one that he sent to Lady Gaga saying ‘Bye mother monster, thank you for all you have done, paws up forever,’ before he killed himself.

Jamey’s family thought that the bullying didn’t affect him anymore. His family said that it seemed that he was getting better, and was happier. Jamey was even seeing a social worker and a therapist. He had a loving family and friends, but it just wasn’t enough. In May of 2011, Jamey even posted his own video on the “It Gets Better” website. The website is an online place for people to help reassure suicidal lesbian, gay, and bisexuals that life gets better after high school. Love yourself and you’re set, said Jamey after he described the torment he faced everyday at school. “I promise you, it will get better”.
