The Wantagh Warriors brought home the Long Island Championship this year, but that was not the only big title that was brought home. Wantagh’s own Dylan Martini, a senior running back and safety at Wantagh, brought home the prestigious Thorpe Award for the first time in the school’s history. This award is given to the most outstanding football player in all of Nassau County. It’s won by nominations and featured plays. This award has been given out since 1942 and in those 83 years Martini is the first from Wantagh to win it.
Martini has been involved in Wantagh football since he was 4 years old, matter of fact he says he fell in love with the sport when his father took him to see his first Wantagh game as a child. Dylan is grateful he won this award and says, “It is crazy to see I am on par with many of the great players here”. Dylan is committed to continue his athletic and academic career at West Point. Dylan focused on bringing home the Long Island Championship before focusing on winning this incredible award. He put in time and dedication to the team and says, “This award was something extra”. Wantagh’s Football Coach, Keith Sachs, spoke about Dylan and said he is a “ridiculous athlete and combines hard work with also being a good teammate”.
Knowing this award is huge, younger Wantagh athletes will look up to Dylan as a role model giving them inspiration to bring home another award and championship in the future. The Wantagh Warriors and community are so proud of the team for their accomplishment and proud of Dylan Martini for this unique and honorable achievement.
