Wantagh Girls’ Varsity Softball swings into its season. Opening with a loss against Mepham, 2-1, but making a comeback win against Division, 6-3, the Warriors have retained a record of 1-1 so far, as they look to make another run for conference title. Having an undefeated season last year gives them courage for this season as they take take on Division, Mepham and East Rockaway in upcoming games.

“This team has become my second family,” says Jaclyn Ludwikowski. “We go out to dinner and recently visited and played at Cooperstown.”

“The team bursting with potential,” said the team’s coach, Mrs. Moran. “We are full of talent and just need to string together our strengths and we should do well come playoffs.”

The Starting lineup includes the following girls: Catcher Nalani O’Brien, freshman; first base Jaclyn Ludwikowski, junior; second base Haley Leimbach, Grade 7; shortstop Emily Van O’Linda, Grade 8; third base Renee Puccio, senior; left field Jillian Collins,sophomore; centerfield Erika Estro, senior; right field Kayley Butcher, sophomore; and pitcher Haley Monahan, a senior who also was injured early in the season.

Captains are Erika Estro, Haley Monahan and Renee Puccio. Haley Monahan, the team’s pitcher, is committed to Stevenson University in Maryland. She will continue to play softball there.

“With our undefeated record last year and they way we’ve played so far, I have hope for the rest of the season,” says Monahan, “Our hard work shows in our performance.”
