Thousands of Long Islanders evacuated their homes due to Hurricane Sandy this past fall. Many evacuees took their pets, but what happened to those pets that no one could take care of?

Was there a place to take these pets? Pets are like siblings, or children to their owners. Mitchell Field in Uniondale is now accepting all different kind of pets that were displaced, or taken from their families that could no longer care for them during this hard time. The shelter is open from 9:30 A.M to 1:30 P.M and 3 P.M to 7:30 PM. The shelter opened on October 28, 2012, accepting over 300 animals. Besides making sure every animal is safe the volunteers helping out are supplying the pets with food, water, medical assistance, and of course tender love and care.

There are a few ways to help out. DONATIONS are a key ingredient in helping these animals. Some of these animals are having reunions with their owners after being away for a while; while others need a new home because their owners can no longer care for them. The pets are up for adoption and need every bit of help they can get.

“There’s no place like home,” is a five word statement that means so much to an animal who doesn’t want to be in a cage anymore. This Saturday The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter will be having a free adoption day. Many dogs from Sandy will be up for adoption. Stop by and adopt a new furry friend!
