The buttery smell of popcorn, the small paper of a ticket in between your fingers, and the excitement of entering a theatre with your friends. Whether you’ve gone to the movie theatre this year or not, you can’t deny yourself the pleasure of absolute cinematic bliss.
This year’s movies have mostly been a hit, even though not everyone could go watch them in the theatres. Here are a few movies which left a mark, whether good or bad: “Wuthering Heights,” “Project Hail Mary,” “Michael,” “Devil Wears Prada 2,” and “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.” As someone who watched “Wuthering Heights” on January 28, 2026 – and had read the book beforehand – it was truly horrific. Rotten Tomatoes rated it a 57%, which I totally agree with. It’s rated 15+ for quite obvious reasons once you go to see it. The movie is an adaptation of Emily Brontë’s novel, however it doesn’t follow the plot whatsoever. The movie would try to cover it up with scenes that never happened in the book to try and make you feel something. Many call it a cheap attempt at an oversexualized movie, while others call it a masterpiece. If you want to watch, I do recommend reading the book first to do some critical thinking.
“Project Hail Mary,” was another book adaptation that was released March 9th of this year, which I also read beforehand. Marissa Mostransky says that she would rate a 10 out of 10, “Because it’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.” She also states that, “It’s a good movie because of the emotion it invokes. I definitely had a lasting impact from it.” I totally agree with Marissa. The movie is a science fiction adaptation that completely follows the plot of the novel by Andy Weir. It’s definitely a recommendation for watching. On April 24, 2026, “Michael” was out in theatres, a movie featuring Jaafar Jackson playing his uncle, Michael Jackson. The movie follows the pop star’s his life. I went to see it myself in the movie theatre at Bellmore Playhouse. The movie is certainly one of the best I’ve seen this year so far, teaching me to love myself, to believe in myself, and to lead the world with love. It shows and tells us the story of his life, making everything he went through something the audience can connect to emotionally. It’s definitely a 10 out of 10.
Another movie that has been a hit in the theatre is “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” a student stated that, “I thought they did a really good job continuing it and like to bring back all the characters.” This student rated it an eight out of ten. They also said that there were some pretty comical scenes, and learned that you could buy a company to save the people working in it. It’s definitely a recommendation.
The last movie to talk about is “Star Wars: Mandalorian and Grogu.” Alyssa Kimball rated this movie a six out of ten, because there were unnecessary characters, could’ve just been an episode, and wasn’t centered around the main characters. “After I saw the movie, I literally forgot a lot because I didn’t care about the plot. It was just a big side quest that had nothing to do with the Mandolorian’s character or Grogu’s” she argued. However, something that did stick out to her was how much Grogu had cared for himself and grew in this movie. She recommends watching the TV show instead of the movie.
There have been so many movies to talk about and see – including some we didn’t get to, like “Backrooms” and “The Drama.” There can be so many things to learn from them. Whether you hated the movie or not, it’s certainly an experience that most people should live through. If you are waiting for a summer “must see,” other movies that are coming out soon are “The Odyssey,” “Spiderman: Brand New Day” and “Toy Story 5.” Have fun watching!
