The season of Badminton has come to an end, but how did it start anyways? Avneet Athwal, a freshman, recalls that the first game was scary since they were going against Great Neck North, a really good team. “But we kept our spirits high and played, even though we lost” states Avneet. The first score was 0:4, but with a rematch though, it was 2:4. And you must be reading this, saying it must be so easy to win in badminton, but is it really? “Badminton is just like tennis yet it has its own rules. Different rackets, scoring is different and it is an inside sport,” Avneet claims. Not only that, but you have to measure how much power your opponent uses in their serves, and in what position they are in the court. Though Wantagh only won one game, it was certainly eventful. Their last game was against Freeport, an away game, when all three singles – Kay, Lana Lee, and Tanisha Ashwal – won their game. Next went the doubles: Elyse Dennis, Lexi Tupperma, Gianna Giglio, Julianna Boyce, Hannah O’Brian, Annalise Keym, Elle Keym, and Caitlin Donahe. Elyse won their game while the other three lost. After this exhibition, though the points didn’t count for the team score, they still won both games. Wantagh won 4:3. When asked about what inspired Avneet to enter Badminton as a sport, she replied, “I picked it because I play with my sister all the time in our backyard when the weather is perfect. It was my childhood favorite!” Though Wantagh didn’t win all of their games this season, the spirit was certainly there, and next season is definitely secured!
