The Undefeated Lady Warriors Hope to Continue Winning Streak

The undefeated Girls’ Varsity Basketball team stands at 9-0 and the girls plan to continue the streak through the playoffs. The Warriors are looking for their first conference title since 2007. Though a strong program and perennial playoff contender, Wantagh hasn’t won a county title since 2006. The Nassau Conference A-I Warriors have dominated in mostly all of their games with the exception of a few close battles.

“We seniors promised each other to play every game like it’s our last,” said senior tri-captain Demi Valenti.

Wantagh stole the game from third-place South Side, 34-31, January 29. Sophomores Alex Parlato had 11 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks and Christina Peden had 10 points, four assists and four steals to keep the team on top of the conference.

Parlato sealed the game against New Hyde Park, 54-24, January 26. She scored 13 points, and had 17 rebounds.

The girls had an impressive win over the conferences fourth place team, Westbury, 52-28, January 18. Peden with a total of 15 points, five assists, and three steals led the game Valenti with 10 points, eight rebounds, and four steals and Paralto with 8 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists.

Second place Garden City (Wantagh’s toughest conference foe) fell to the Warriors thanks to Valenti’s steal late in the fourth quarter. Parlato had 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Valenti added 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

The girls are very hungry and determined to get a championship,” said Coach Stan Bujacich. Bujacich now has 256 career wins, all at Wantagh. “Our senior captains have done an outstanding job in being leaders.”

Bujacich has been coaching the girls basketball team for 20 years and except for 2003, has made it to the playoffs every year. With the help of assistant coach Glenn Poveromo and JV coach, Erin Colton, he hopes to have another successful run in playoffs. Bujacich is hoping to get a No. 2 seed in the Nassau County playoffs.

“Whether they step on the court or not, each teammate plays a vital role in securing the wins,” said senior tri-captain Erin Smith. “All season we’ve worked really hard at practice and have come together as a team combining our defensive and offensive skills and that’s what has paid off.”
