The girls’ soccer team lost a heartbreaking semifinal Nassau County Class A playoff game to Garden City in penalty kicks, October 30. The girls played a phenomenal game and never gave up. Wantagh was seeded No. 3 while Garden City was seeded No. 2. This was the third consecutive year Wantagh reached the semifinal game.

The game was played at Cold Spring Harbor High School under the lights. The semifinal game two years ago also ended in penalty kicks against Garden City. Wantagh’s overall record was 6-4-5 and Garden City record was 9-4.

Ashley Gendels appeared to have scored at the end of sudden death. There was controversy over how much time was left. But in the end Wantagh didn’t get the goal. After five kicks for each team, penalties were tied at 3 and then game went into sudden death, where GC scored and Wantagh didn’t.

The Warriors played Island Trees in the Quarter finals. They won 3-0, on a goal by Amanda Adia and two by Chelsea Kingston.. Julianna King had completed the game with another shutout and 5 saves.

The girls had a very memorable season with big conference wins against eventual county champ Garden City, Manhasset and Island Trees. In the last 5 games no goals were scored against Wantagh. That is pretty impressive considering the girls are playing in the hardest conference in the state.

The team was led by three senior captains, Julia Fazio, Ally Murphy, and Amanda Lynch. Fazio will continue her soccer career at Roanoke University, Murphy will be attending UMass for lacrosse and Lynch is still undecided on where she is going.

The girls had a successful season and under the guidance of Coach James Polo became one big family and made memories to last a lifetime.
